St Elizabeth Center Open!

Sep 26, 2017

St. Elizabeth Center (formerly St Joseph Shelter) is now open at

2726 Caroline Ave, Lorain, OH  44055

Catholic Charities has been a steadfast supplier of food and shelter to Lorain residents for more than 20 years, providing a place in central Lorain for persons who are homeless, hungry or otherwise vulnerable to receive assistance. Holy Spirit Parish has been a vital part of the St. Joseph Overnight Shelter for many of those years.  We are proud to be a continuing part of the St. Elizabeth Center as Catholic Charities continues to serve the people of our area.  Congratulations to all who have made this possible!

 About St. Elizabeth Center

Catholic Charities converted the former Polish American Citizens Club into the new St. Elizabeth Center. The St. Elizabeth Center will house a 50-bed men’s shelter, congregate hot meal program, a choice pantry, Community Connections and case management services.  The new site will combine two facilities that operated in Lorain, the St. Joseph Overnight Shelter and the Lorain Family Center.

Lorain Family Center (aka 8th Street) and the St. Joseph Shelter, on the grounds of the former St. Joseph Church, have been a caring and comforting haven for the homeless in Lorain. These programs have been an asset to the community and directly reflect the mission and values of Catholic Charities, which calls us to show dignity and respect to every person and provide basic needs to the most vulnerable.  Together in 2015, these sites provided 38,495 meals and 8,606 nights of shelter.

 About St. Elizabeth of Hungary

The renovated facility is suitably named the St. Elizabeth Center after St. Elizabeth of Hungary, a saint who lived a life full of prayer and service to the poor. She is often depicted with a basket of bread to show her devotion to the poor and hungry. St. Elizabeth administered to the sick, supported the poor, and was dedicated to works of charity.

Attention:  A new, earlier drop-off time has been set!  To all of the dedicated St. Elizabeth Center volunteer cooks—the meals that you prepare need to be at Holy Spirit Parish between 3:30 and 3:45 p.m. on the day that you are scheduled to cook.  These meals need to be at the new shelter by 4:30 at the latest—the meals are served at 5:00 p.m.  Thank you to all who participate in this most worth-while project, you are appreciated!
